About the Artist
After a 45-year career as a design/marketing consultant and professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Dan Droz became a full-time sculptor, focusing on large-scale public sculpture to engage people and elevate public spaces. His works have been commissioned for both public and private collections including the entrance to the Museum of Art and History in Los Angeles, the Heritage Trail in downtown Pittsburgh, Oxon-Hill Sculpture Park in Washington, DC, and many commercial and public venues. Thematically, his abstract sculptures deal with the complexity of human relationships, calling attention to the similarities and differences in families and communities. For example, his 12’ sculpture, “The Gathering,” in Pittsburgh’s strip district, depicts a group of friends meeting each other before an adventure together, and has created a focal point for cyclists and visitors entering the bike path along the Allegheny River. “Family Portrait,” at Pittsburgh’s International Airport became a focal point for families to take ‘selfies.’ And “Mother and Child,” commissioned by McCaffery Development for their downtown Pittsburgh development, references the relationship between a parent and young child. His sculpture “Remembering Youth,” in downtown Bridgeville, PA, depicts an elderly person remembering their past. Dan works primarily in metal, using novel methods of fabrication where formal elements seem to change as one views them from different perspectives. Dan is the recipient of numerous awards including the Mary Phillips award for Sculpture, Designer of the Year (ID Magazine), Best-of-America (Abitare/Italy), and as a ‘Distinguished Alumni” of Harvard College at the 25th Anniversary of their Visual Arts program (1996).
