About the Artist

J. MallisJules Mallis (they/them) is an inter-media artist based in Pittsburgh, PA. They perform live as a VJ and DJ and utilize digital media, paint, installation, performance, sound and audience interaction to create unique creative and enriching experiences. Through a variety of creative collaborations, performing with ensembles, and organizing events with collectives, their artistic productions focus on building community, playfulness, maximalism, joy and the synergy across senses.

Mallis studied Studio Art with a concentration in Electronic Time-Based Media and Cultural Anthropology, earning a Bachelors of Humanities and Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Their current studio art practice is based out of BOOM Concepts, a space prioritizing the advancement of artists and entrepreneurs from marginalized backgrounds.

In 2018, Mallis was commissioned to paint a 1000+ ft mural directly on the street of Strawberry Way in Downtown Pittsburgh. Colorful imagery of seasonal fruits are painted within an interactive game that poses bold questions about equity and justice to the participants. Mallis has exhibited, performed and curated art across the United States including at The Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Coaxial Arts Foundation, PhilaMOCA, MOCA Cleveland, Baby’s All Right, The Silent Barn, Fringe Arts and more.

In 2020, Mallis was honored with a 40 Under 40 award by Pittsburgh Magazine and PUMP. Most recently, they have launched a new radio show called Jamming With Malzof, exploring the musical connections amongst artists, labels and dance music genres.
