About the Artist

Jan LooneyJan Loney is a sculptor known for decorative and functional artisanal metalwork. Over the past decade, my practice has evolved to include larger-scale, public artwork commissions, growing incrementally larger in scope with each commission. The skills and experiences from working in the public realm influence my approach to studio works, and has reignited a passion for exploring new media, materials, and methods.

My interest in architectural spaces, landscapes, and public venues has grown exponentially. I relish working on expansive, site-specific projects designed to transform notions of place and impact people’s relationship with sites. Working on “Found” at Allegheny College forged another new passion with Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), the world standard for implementing and measuring sustainable built environments. Henceforth, I strive to incorporate “Green Energy” principles in my art, working with recycled, sustainable materials, and methods as an underlying inspiration.

I typically work in metal for its durability, great expressive potential, and variety in color, pattern, and texture, because I love the hands-on work of cutting, forming, crafting, and finishing it. I have always embraced the challenges of working with this medium, mastering new, technical/ fabrication skills, working with “precious” recycled and found industrial materials, and exploring new creative themes. I learn through intense self-directed research and prototyping, by working with a wide array of people: from lay people, students, Master craftspersons, and by collaboration with other artists. I find that working with other people gives as much back to me as I give to my collaborators.
