About the Artist

Mary TremonteMary Tremonte is an artist, activist, educator, and DJ based in Pittsburgh, with a piece of her heart in Toronto. A member of Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, she works with “printmaking in the expanded field,” including printstallation, interactive silk screen printing in public space, and wearable artist multiples. As DJ Mary Mack she strives to make safe(r) spaces on dance floors for embodying a body politic with pleasure. With Justseeds and independently Mary has exhibited, presented lectures and workshops, and performed in Pittsburgh, Toronto, throughout the United States, and internationally.

Mary recently completed Dirt Is Beautiful, a public art project in collaboration with Grow Pittsburgh, through Pittsburgh Office for Public Art’s Environment, Health, and Public Art Initiative. She was previously an artist in residence with Literacy Pittsburgh, through OPA’s initiative to pair artists with organizations that support immigrants and refugees in the Pittsburgh region, resulting in creative projects that assist newcomers in connecting with the city and one another. Formerly youth programs coordinator at The Andy Warhol Museum, she values art education as a means of empowerment and social change.

Mary is co-organizer, with artist Vanessa Adams, of Queer Ecology Hanky Project, an exhibition of over 120 artist-made bandanas. The project has been exhibited at Women’s Studio Workshop, Maine College of Art and Design, and Irma Freeman Center for Imagination, with an upcoming exhibit at Zygote Press in Cleveland, OH in Spring 2022. In late 2021 Mary and Vanessa released Exuberant Possibilities, an artist book that delves deeper into the project, available through Booklyn.

Mary holds an Interdisciplinary Master’s of Art, Media, and Design from OCAD University (2014) and a Bachelor of Humanities and Arts from Carnegie Mellon University (2000). Through her work she aims to create temporary utopias and sustainable commons through pedagogy, collaboration, visual pleasure and serious fun.

“Connection is at the root of everything I do. I strive to create opportunities for diverse communities to connect with one another and themselves through visual culture and embodied experiences. In my public art practice, I focus on strengthening counterpublics as well as bridging differences in shared public space.”
